Are you sure your scalp is healthy?

Long, short, curly, straight…Hair is more than just a bundle of fibre. It is seen as an expression of style and personality. An occasional bad hair day can cause anyone frustration but hair loss can be a distressing sight to face in the mirror every morning. Most people think thinning hair is a guy problem…well, unfortunately, that is wrong. More and more women are dealing with hair thinning in some form for some reason. Some experience general thinning all over, while some see the center part gradually widening.

The average scalp normally has around 100,000 hairs. A follicle produces a single hair that grows about half an inch per month. After growing for two to six years, the hair goes into a resting phase before falling out. It is then replaced with a new hair and the cycle starts again. At any given point, 85% of hair is growing while 15% is resting. Because the resting hairs fall regularly, most people shed 50-100 hairs per day. This is the normal function of a healthy scalp and follicle.

What can be causing loss?

Pin-pointing the reason for loss is not always easy. Hair loss in women can be triggered by many different contributing factors from medical conditions to lifestyle factors. All reasons of hair loss cause an interference with the normal cycle of scalp hair growth. The follicle is a complex place and anything that can get the cycle off track can cause hair loss. In 80% of cases, hair loss in women is due to the genetic predisposition to androgens. Androgens are hormones that normally flow in the blood, like the feminine hormones estrogen and progesterone.

If you are genetically predisposed, the androgens will have a negative influence on your hair follicles, which translates to thinning of the hair and an acceleration of its lifecycle. Another major cause of thinning and loss are hormonal shifts due to imbalances, thyroid problems, child birth, starting or stopping the pill, and menopause. Alopecia is a common cause of hair loss as well. This is where an immune system mistakenly attacks healthy follicles causing the hair to detach and fall. Many medications can also trigger hair loss. Blood thinners, high blood pressure, heart disease, arthritis, and depression medications are among the most common to cause a hair loss side effect. Sudden shedding from extreme physical or emotional stress can also occur. Examples of extreme stresses are serious illness, major surgery, trauma to the body and severe emotional trauma.

These significant stresses spark a change in your body’s physiological functions and cause a disproportionate number of hairs to go into the resting phase all at once, resulting in a considerable fall lasting six to eight months. Scalp ailments like ringworm and seborrhea (over active oil glands) also cause hair loss and thinning. This is from the fungus and oil hardening in the follicle causing blockage. Rapid weight loss and crash diets are also hair loss triggers. Stress is one of most common causes to trigger hair.
